In the summer term most first-year students will begin a foreign language course as part of the curriculum. Please read the information below.
I. CURRICULUM FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE
- Foreign language courses are conducted by Foreign Language Centre acting on the basis of Resolution of the Senate of the University of Lodz of 18 June,2021.
- FLC offers a language course in one of the following languages: English, German, Russian, French, Spanish.
- A foreign language course takes 120 hrs in accordance with the curriculum and finishes with a curriculum exam at B2 level (B2+ in second-cycle studies or uniform master’s studies.
- Before starting the course every student is obliged to take a placement test.
II. PLACEMENT TEST
- The placement test is available from 4 November to 3 December 2024
- In order to do the test it is necessary to enrol at Platforma Zdalnego Kształcenia Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (lodz.pl) and then:
a. find a language test on the course list, e.g. a test in English,
b. enrol for the test: your access code is the same as the one for Health and Safety course, - Remember!
a. you can do the test in one language only,
b. you can do the test only once. - About the test:
a, the test comprises 5 levels,
b. at each level there are 20 questions,
c. you need to score14 points to get to a higher level. - ON COMPLETION YOU MUST PRINT OUT THE TEST RESULT!
III. ON COMPLETION OF THE TEST:
- IF YOUR RESULT IS B1 OR LOWER THAN B1:
a. You must enrol for a curriculum foreign language course: you are obliged to submit declaration on selecting a foreign language (annex no.1) in the place designated by the dean’s office.
The declaration of language choice (Appendix 1) should be made by filling in the questionnaire: - language declaration - Economics in English. The questionnaire must be completed by the deadline 20.12.2024. - IF YOUR RESULT IS B2 OR HIGHER THAN B2:
a. You can enrol for a language course in the language you have chosen in the placement test: declaration on selecting a foreign language (annex no.1) in the place designated by the dean’s office (look above III.1.a),
b. You can sit the curriculum exam in the language chosen in the placement test, in the upcoming exam session before your curriculum foreign language course begins. REMEMBER! PASSED EXAM DOES NOT EXEMPT YOU FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE LANGUAGE COURSE.
You can continue learning the language selected in the placement test at C1 level or choose another language at any level:
- apply for dean’s consent: submit the completed application for dean’s consent (annex no. 5) together with the printed out score in the dean’s office,
- Submit dean’s consent together with declaration on selecting a foreign language (annex no. 2) in FLC by 20 December 2024.
- If you fail the exam, enrol for a curriculum language course: submit declaration on selecting a foreign language (annex no.1)in the place designated by the dean’s office (look above III.1.a),
- If you have passed the exam, wait for the information from FLC on the obligatory language course in the language you have selected. - IF YOU ARE A HOLDER OF AN INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OR ANY OTHER DOCUMENT CERTIFYING YOUR LANGUGE COMPETENCE AT MIN B2 LEVEL, included in Annex to Resolution No. 206 of the Senate of the University of Lodz of June 18, 2021 you may be exempted from attending a course and sitting the exam. To do so:
a. By 20 December submit application for the exemption from the final examination in a modern foreign language (annex no. 4) and a document certifying your language competence in FLC in order to obtain FLC Head’s recommendation (documents certifying your language competence obtained after 20 December will be taken into account as well),
b. submit the application in the dean’s office,
c. show a copy of dean’s consent to the language teacher conducting a language course at your faculty and major.
d. Remember! You may enrol for a language course (not obligatory) at a level higher than the one indicated in the certificate or choose another language at any level. In order to do so, submit declaration on selecting a foreign language (annex no. 3) in FLC by 20 December.
