About the Faculty

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz.

The Faculty was established in 1965 when the previously independent Higher School of Economics merged with the University of Lodz. At the same time, the University departments dealing with sociology moved from the Faculty of Philosophy and History to the newly created structure. The initiators of this undertaking included distinguished scholars, such as Remigiusz Bierzanek, Jan Drewnowski, Edward Lipiński, Jerzy Rachwalski, Edward Rosset and Jan Szczepański. In the beginning of the 1990s, several departments decided to separate from the Faculty of Economics and Sociology and form a new Faculty of Management. In 1994, the Senate of the University of Lodz accepted their decision.

Currently, the Faculty of Economics and Sociology is the biggest of the eleven faculties of the University of Lodz. It employs over about 450 people, 75% of whom are academics representing areas such as demographics, economics, econometrics, social policy, statistics and sociology. Almost one third of employees holds habilitation or professorship. Research and educational activities are carried out within 36 independent departments and centres. Some of them established institutes, incorporating several departments and centres. In previous year, research carried out at the Faculty was funded with ten grants awarded by the Polish Committee of Scientific Research and 24 grants from international research and development programmes, such as TEMPUS, CIPA, NCO, COPERNICUS and ACE. Academics from the Faculty maintain research contacts with numerous institutions from Europe, North and South America, and Asia.

Courses given at our Faculty are highly appreciated by candidates, students, and graduates. Currently, the Faculty has almost 10 thousands students which constitutes over 25% of all of the students of the University of Lodz. The students follows courses in seven areas: Economics, European Studies, Finance and Banking, Spatial Economy, Computer Studies and Econometrics, Sociology, and International Relations. Also, the Faculty offers evening and weekend courses, BA courses, and complementary MA courses in Economics, Finance and Banking and Sociology. Finally, postgraduate (post-MA) courses and PhD studies are also available in the area of economics and sociology. Best students can spend part of their studies abroad, at many European universities, within the framework of the SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme. Many student organisations are active at the Faculty, including the students’ self-government, twelve scientific associations and several others.

The Faculty is well equipped with technical and, in particular, computer resources available to students and employees. Students and employees can also use the rich library resources of the Main Library and the J. Chałasiński Sociological Library. Finally, within the premises of the Faculty there are two cafes and one of the best-functioning canteens in Lodz.
